Aboriginal War Census 1915-16

Aboriginal Census 1915

6,500+ records

At the beginning of WWI, the Australian Government recorded the details of all Australians for the purposes of creating a wealth based tax to help fund Australia’s effort. Most records were completed on individual cards which were collated and then possibly destroyed.

Likely due to remoteness of the indigenous population, the aboriginal records were collected by local authorities by hand without requiring individuals to complete cards. As such, the records remain largely intact. This record sets contains details for indigenous living in Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands, mainly males but in some areas females in the age bracket (18 to 45) were incorporated.
